State Representative John Gillespie, sponsor of several new laws targeting dangerous criminals, announced today that he will continue his fight against violent crime in the next session of the Tennessee General Assembly.
“The recent kidnapping and murder of Eliza Fletcher has reminded us of the terrible impact of violent crime on the Memphis area,” Gillespie said. “While we must do more to discourage young people from entering a life of crime, violent offenders must be dealt with severely. Those who commit property crimes should get a second chance. Those who commit violent crimes against law-abiding citizens must face severe consequences,” remarked Gillespie.
Gillespie was a sponsor of Tennessee’s new “Truth in Sentencing” law that passed the legislature earlier this year. Truth in Sentencing requires certain violent offenders to serve their entire prison sentence. Gillespie was the prime sponsor of a law that increased penalties for those who commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He also worked to bring more State Troopers to Memphis interstates to enhance safety on local roads.
“My top priority in the State House for the past two years has been fighting violent crime, but there is so much more to do,” Gillespie stated. “Mrs. Fletcher’s kidnapping and murder seems to be a tipping point in the fight against violent crime in our community. I will continue my efforts to strengthen laws against those who commit violence against our citizens. Our community must send a strong message that there are no second chances for those who commit brutal, violent crimes against other people,” said Gillespie.
Gillespie is a strong supporter of law enforcement. He is endorsed by the Memphis Police Association and the Shelby County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association.
A graduate of High Point University, Gillespie is a native Memphian. He supports the mission of a local senior living facility by serving as Grant Coordinator. Gillespie is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
